How to install Steam on Fedora Linux

Steam has been very active and supportive to linux community. Steam even has their own OS (Operating System) which is called Steam OS. The latest action game coming for linux and being supported by Steam is Metro: Last Light, and there are tons of new games on steam can play on linux. If you are running Fedora on your desktop or laptop. You can easily install Steam, here is how.

Download STEAM repository

$ su -
# wget http://spot.fedorapeople.org/steam/steam.repo

Move STEAM repo file into your system repo directory

# mv steam.repo /etc/yum.repos.d

Finally you can install steam on Fedora now

# yum update
# yum install steam

There is another way to install Steam through the RPMFusion repository. RPMFusion repository is still in testing phase, but Steam package is available to download if you add and enable RPMFusion repository in your Fedora system.

Steam package from RPMFusion repository is only available for 32 bit system, but you will be able to install and work fine on a 64 bit fedora system. There are more than 350 steam games for linux waiting for you to be played. To install Steam through the RPMFusion repository, you must have free and non free RPMFusion repository enabled.

# yum -y --enablerepo=rpmfusion-nonfree-updates-testing install steam

Make sure to reboot your fedora system before using Steam, by installing Steam package from RPMFusion repository, the Steam packages will come with some profiles enabled that stop you to use the Ubuntu Steam Runtime makes graphical artifacts and sound problems when you run Steam in Fedora system. Steam package already included S3 Texture compression libraries which required by some Steam games for playing games on Open Source drivers.

# yum reboot
